Gram negative, rigid, curved rods,
actively motile by polar flagellum, nonsporing, noncapsulated, present in
marine environments and
surface waters. The most important
member of the
genus is V. cholerae, the causative
agent of cholera / Asiatic cholera. It was first isolated by Robert Koch.
